The Communications Specialist/Media Production position serves as a member of the district’s communications team, supporting internal and external communications efforts under the direction of the Communications Director. This role helps tell the story of the District and its schools through a variety of channels by producing high-quality media content that promotes the mission, vision and achievements of Columbus Public Schools. This position requires creativity, technical expertise, attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple projects and strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES District Communications and Publications:
- Manage publication and distribution of district communications to staff, parents, and community
- Produce employee newsletter (Helm) including annual print version and regular digital messages
- Develop parental newsletter (Discoveries) with both printed and digital versions throughout the year
- Create alumni digital newsletter with multiple editions throughout the year
-Produce community newsletter (Stakeholders) for key stakeholder groups
- Develop district annual report including facts and figures materials
- Coordinate Foundation annual report and communications materials
- Ensure all publications maintain consistent branding and messaging Media Production and Content Creation
- Photograph and film school events, classroom activities, and district functions
- Produce high-quality video content including promotional videos, event coverage, instructional materials, and district highlights
- Capture and edit photography for district publications, social media, and marketing materials
- Design graphics, infographics, and visual materials for print and digital distribution
- Operate and maintain video, audio, and photography equipment
- Stream and record special events, and other district functions
- Mintain and update online media library of district photos and video content
- Create library of flyers and brochures that can be used district-wide
- Manage video and photo archives, ensuring proper organization and accessibility
- Maintain a Library of Annual Assets to include - final PDF file, Final Indesign file, all photos used, all graphics used, etc. Digital Media and Website Management:
- Provide creative content for district web pages and ensure accuracy and timely updates
- Keep staff updated on website features and assist buildings with website issues
- Manage and maintain district website content
- Create social media postings and content in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications
- Oversee district social media platforms, creating engaging content and monitoring community engagement
- Post content to district social media accounts and other digital mediums as directed Public Relations and Media Management:
- Assist in creating news releases with the Director of Communications
- Assist Director of Communications in coordinating crisis communication procedures and messaging
- Create marketing materials and brochures for district programs, initiatives, and special events
- Must be proficient in Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva and other graphic design mediums
- Assist Director of Communications in coordinating communication efforts during bond issues, levy campaigns, or other district initiatives Event Coordination and Recognition Programs:
- Co-chair the Employee Recognition Banquet with the Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent and Columbus Education Association - Co-chair Staff Appreciation Day planning and implementation
- Coordinate High School Honors Recognition Reception in conjunction with the High School
- Support recognition events including academic achievement celebrations
- Assist with coordinating and conducting alumni tours of buildings and events as requested
- Aid in preparing and mailing alumni correspondence
- Support special district projects and events as requested by the Superintendent or Director of Communications Strategic Communications and Collaboration:
- Develop and implement branding strategies that enhance the district's public image
- Monitor and assess communication effectiveness through analytics and stakeholder feedback
- Facilitate two-way communication between the district and community stakeholders
- Respond to inquiries from parents, staff, media, and community members in a timely and professional manner
- Collaborate with building principals and staff to highlight school achievements and activities
- Support employee communication needs and internal messaging initiatives
- Coordinate with Foundation on joint communication initiatives
- Multi-task effectively and utilize time management skills to meet deadlines ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Attend school board meetings, administrative meetings, and district events as required
- Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive district information
- Participate in professional development opportunities related to communications and media production
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee QUALIFICATIONS Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, Multimedia Production, or related field
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in communications, public relations, or media production
- Demonstrated proficiency with video editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Canva or similar)
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud and other graphic design software
- Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
- Experience managing websites and social media platforms
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong time management and organizational skills with ability to multi-task effectively
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation
- Ability to pass background check as required by Nebraska law Preferred:
- Experience in educational setting or public sector communications
- Knowledge of K-12 education terminology and issues
- Experience with live streaming technology and equipment
- Professional photography and videography portfolio
- Familiarity with graphic design principles and branding strategies

- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while editing or producing content (frequent)

- Occasional evening and weekend work required for events, school board meetings, and special functions
