Full job description
The County Roads Supervisor oversees the construction, maintenance, and repair of county roads, bridges, and related infrastructure. This role includes supervising road department personnel, managing equipment and safety programs, and ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
Essential Job Functions
- Supervise and coordinate the daily operations of the Road Department.
- Approve leave and oversee requests, manage employee performance and discipline.
- Operate and oversee use of heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, graders, excavators).
- Inspect roads, bridges, culverts, and drainage structures for damage and maintenance needs.
- Respond to public complaints and service requests.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, equipment usage, and inspections.
- Perform and oversee snow removal operations and emergency road repairs.
- Conduct or coordinate annual bridge and railroad crossing inspections.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and conduct monthly safety audits.
- Manage inventory of road signs, culverts, and bridges.
- Coordinate with utility companies for locates and project planning.
- Assist in budget preparation and project planning for road improvements.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents:
- Strong knowledge of road and bridge construction and maintenance practices.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction plans.
- Proficiency in operating and maintaining heavy equipment
- Knowledge of welding, vehicle maintenance, and safety protocols.
- Ability to supervise and train staff effectively.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and reports.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in order to calculate quantities for culvert road construction, costs, budgets, etc.
- Strong public speaking skills.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment or supervising road maintenance crews.
- Vocational training in heavy equipment operation preferred.
- Previous experience with bridge inspections and road safety programs.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Valid Nebraska Class A or Class B CDL license or ability to obtain preferred.

This is a strictly physical position and may require employees to operate machinery for 10 hours or more at a time.
Working Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to both indoor and outdoor conditions. Exposure to inclement weather, rough terrain, grease, dust, dirt, and other allergens/normal hazards that are present in working with machinery or vehicles are common. Winter conditions often include snow and ice. Summer conditions often include hot, humid, or extreme temperatures. Conditions may be slippery due to wet surfaces, snow, ice, mud or loose gravel, sand, and dirt. The noise level in the work environment is typically loud.
