Description:
This position within the DNA Genetic Services Team would be actively engaged in working with nucleus farm data, commercial crossbred data and data generated from a wide range of experimental projects. The ideal candidate would have experience working with raw, unedited data sets and preparing that data for statistical analysis, running various analyses, visualizing data sets and results and preparing reports for the company’s internal and external use. Although this position is within our nucleus support team, this individual would work with a wide range of data sets (genetic and commercial) and support the reporting and summarization requests from numerous individuals and groups within the company including nucleus farm leadership, the genetic research team, the Production Research Committee and others as required
Duties:
· Provide data management and analytical support to the DNA nucleus program, Commercial Crossbred Program and Commercial Production Research
o Monitor nucleus farm data flows
o Performs and develops error trapping routines
o Develop and monitor reports used in managing the nucleus system
o Prepare and analyze data sets in response to team inquiries
· Participate in various meetings as required to share and present results, educate, train and provide support:
o Nucleus Production Leadership meetings
o Regional nucleus farm meetings
o Research Geneticist meetings
o Sales and Technical Service team meetings
· Provide data support for our Commercial Crossbred testing program. This would involve:
o Working with farm teams and research personnel to monitor data flows
o Perform and develop error trapping routines
o Further develop processes to track crossbred animals in commercial production systems
· Other responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
o Project Management
o Travel to nucleus farms to assist with training on data collection
o Assisting with data collection for occasional experimental research
o Providing support (specification and testing) for ongoing nucleus program database development
Specific skills required:
o Ability to code in R is essential
o Writing and running SQL queries
o Statistical analysis using R
o Ability to occasionally work within a Unix environment
o Use of MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint
o Experience creating and manipulating large and small data sets
o A willingness to learn and work with software common to swine production and swine breeding
o An M.S. in Animal Breeding, Statistics, Data Science or similar is highly preferred. Persons with a B.S. with demonstrated experience are encouraged to apply
